Daughter has infection (could possibly be staph) from hospital. What would you do?
Basically I had my daughter a week ago vaginal delivery. They attached a probe to her head to measure her vitals.. it fell off and they reattached it.. I delivered and everything was a good non complicated birth. Well, we go to our first doctor appointment and the little red mark that was left has turned into a big bump (we have had her in a hat to keep her warm and it’s in a spot that you wouldn’t notice unless looking for it with her full head of dark hair) well the doctor made us rush to a children’s hospital an hour away in the city. She has been there since monday and they are now saying it could be a staph infection.. again this is on my 7 day old newborn!
What would you do? Should we be calling my OB (who delivered her and attached the probe) about this or write a letter to them to complain? Should be write a letter to the hospital about this to complain? Would you demand they at the very least cover your co pay for causing this? I just feel like it would be ridicules to not say anything and let these people get away with causing something so serious. I am young ( 24 and hubby’s 27) and we are not sure how to handle this
- Also we were never told that it was even a puncture we just thought it was like a sticker to her head.. we were never told to keep it clean or covered or Anything.. they had all kinds of nurses touching the red mark and did nothing to protect it.
Yes her peditrician saw her in the hospital the day she was born and the two days after and noticed it was slightly bumped up the 3rd day but she just took note and said she would watch it so yes we can prove it was at the hospital
follow up with the infectious disease specialist and do EXACTLY as the doctor orders.

Can you prove the hospital caused it? Can you prove she picked up the infection from the hospital? If not I highly doubt they will do anything for you. I have never heard of them puncturing a newborns head with anything, but even if they do, it still possible to get infected. If a baby scratches themselves they can get infected. Umbilical cords can get infected…the hospital isnt going to pay medical bills for this happening. I am sorry your baby is in the hospital right now however I just dont think there is much you can do however you can try if you want to. You will probably need a lawyer.
edit: that proves she had a bump on her head while in the hospital. It does not prove the hospital was negligent and poor care caused an infection. Infections happen. She is a newborn baby and newborn babies are very suseptable to infections. I agree with the other person who said you should focus on your daughter getting better, not the money aspect and how much you can try to get out of a hospital who probably did nothing wrong. I can understand you are upset…I would be too. Nobody wants to see their baby in the hospital but looking for somewhere to place the blame isnt going to get her better any faster.

It’s unfair to blame the hospital for a staph infection. 20 to 30% of the population carries staph bacteria on them at any time (and these are healthy adults). Unless the hospital has had an outbreak of staph, you’ll likely have a hard time proving they caused this.
Focus on the health of your child, not who should pay for the co-pay. That should be your last concern right now.
*ETA: Her head being "slightly bumpy" proves nothing. Lots of infants (including myself) who had monitors put in often are born with swollen or sore spots on their head.
You really seem more concerned about the money aspect of this case than your child’s life. For all you know, you or the father could have been an active carrier of staph and infected her yourself.

honestly, you dont really have a case.
there are risks with everything. there are huge risks just breathing the air around you.
i higly highly HIGHLY doubt they did this to you and your child intentionally. i mean really! do you honestly think they caused the infection on purpose? that sounds a bit ridiculous.
my son had the internal probes placed in his head while i was in labor and they ended up getting stuck when they were prepping me for my emergency c-section. he ended up with a scab on his head for a while, but i was not about to go try to sue the hospital or something like that for something that was out of my control
