What do I do about my cats (maybe) bite wound? HELP!?
Okay, so one night about a week ago my 6 month old cat, Jerry, got out at night and got into some kind of fight or something with some kind of animal, and came back with lots of scratches (one a decent size, but it didn’t seem to bother him after the first day) on him that I didn’t think were a big deal, and just now I was petting him and there was a sac covering the big wound I mentioned, and it popped on me, and it was pinkish, I assume it was puss. I go to look at the wound, and it looks pretty deep, and it’s a circle about the size of the round part of a crayon (if that makes sense?) I’ll include a link to a picture, no it’s not a vagina or anything. The person holding him was wearing gloves.
Anyways, should I schedule a vet visit?
I washed him off with warm water and put peroxide on the wound, but with a towelette, not directly, and he keeps licking it.
WHAT SHOULD I DO? I’m really worried, please help.
Thanks ahead of time!
picture of it (everything’s kind of blue and a little blurry, though. The dark part is actually a deep red and around it is all pink.) : http://i48.tinypic.com/zxurzd.jpg
I hope your cat is vaccinated, He should still go to the vet to prevent a serious infection and to make sure he doesn’t have any diseases from another animal. Good Luck!

thank god that is not a vagina.
vet, all wounds should be seen by a vet.

That’s a juicy abcess indeed and yes that was pus that came out. I’d take him to the vet and get a course of antibiotics for it. Cats heal up really quickly and abcesses have a habit of bursting, draining then healing up on top leaving infection inside. He will be ok, don’t worry, but he does need antibiotics to ensure all the infection clears up properly.
In future if this happens again, peroxide is a bit fierce for wounds, dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a pint of boiled and cooled water and use that to bathe it with gently. Salt water does no damage to the soft tissue and is generally a better option than peroxide. You did do the right thing in bathing it though.

Have a vet check it out – here is why.
A chap in Eastern Canada thought that his dogs problem was not all that great either because the dog had ’sores’ on its body. Finally took the dog to the vet and discovered some twit had fired some 40 BB’s into the dogs body. Just something to think about.

Typical puncture wound and it has formed an abscess. Somebody bit him, probably. Looks like it’s on his back or shoulder. You can look after this yourself. Cut away all the hair around it so the wound is clear of hair. Once (or maybe twice a day for the first day or two), soak the scab that forms with a clean cloth or cotton pad soaked in warm water until it softens and comes off. There will be pus in it, and this will come out when the scab comes off. Press gently around the wound to express as much as you can with little pressure, mop it away with a paper towel, then leave it till next day. A little less attention is better than too much. Resist the urge to get at it several times a day, and don’t press too hard on it. You don’t want to break the pocket where the infection is confined, just open the surface to allow it to drain to the surface. What you’re doing is opening it up so it tends to heal from the inside out instead of forming new skin over the infection. It should start looking better in 4 days or so and be producing a lot less pus. If not, then it may be time for a vet visit. Him licking it is fine, it will tend to keep it open, same as you opening it. You’ll know it’s getting better when he stops fussing over it. I’ve treated quite a few this way. The time I take them to the vet for an abscess is if it’s on the stomach area. That needs a vet’s attention and the sooner the better.
If you think it’s a bite rather than a claw wound, check for where the opposite set of teeth got him. Usually only one side bites deep, but there could be a corresponding puncture a couple of inches away.
And don’t worry too much. A cat abscess is not dangerous in itself unless, as I mentioned, it’s on the stomach. If left untreated in any way, an abscess can recur and weaken the cat which is repeatedly fighting the infection. This is not a danger to your average housecat which gets treatment sooner or later, though it can be to a feral cat which can get weak enough to be susceptible to other things. And the reason for not squeezing an abscess is that if the infection breaks out of the pocket it’s in, it can get into the general bloodstream and then you really need anitbiotics.

Your cat had an abscess. It was infection that leaked out. It was good that you cleaned out the wound, however peroxide could sting and possibly damage tissues in deep wounds.
You should keep the wound clean and open, it needs to be allowed to drain. Take a warm, wet washcloth and hold on the wound several times per day to promote healing from the inside out (this will help prevent the wound healing outside in and trapping the infection in again.
You should go to the vet. Even if you can keep the wound clean you will still need about 10 days of antibiotics to get rid of the infection that he already has.

If it’s a small puncture wound and it’s already burst then just use hot compresses 3 times a day and keep the wound open to drain.
Do NOT use peroxide on cat wounds. It kills bad and GOOD bacteria which is not good for healing wounds. You can also squeeze the wound a little to get out more pus. You do not need to put on any ointments unless directed by your vet.
Cats heal from the outside in so it’s important to keep it open till it stops draining.
If it gets any worse or gets bigger then take it to the vet for antibiotics.
I hope you vaccinated your cat. If not you may need to have it tested in a few months for leukemia, aids and chlamydia and watch for other illnesses like herpes, conjunctivitis and upper respiratory infection. Your cat may also get sick do to stress. You may also want to watch it for rabies
You can also get L-Lysine from your local health food store. It is an immune booster to help boost the immune system during times of stress and sickness. Ask your vet about proper dosage. I believe it’s 400 mgs for adult cats and 100 mgs for kittens.
I hope your kitten will be ok.

It is an abscess. This actually happened to my cat as well and she require some veterinary care. Your cat has an infection and should be treated. With my cat they actually made a couple of incisions on each side of the abscess and inserteda shunt to help it drain. It was kinda gross, but it is important that it is properly drained so that it heals correctly and you don’t have further problems. After a week or so the vet removed the shunt and allowed the wound to heal. They will probably give you some antibiotics as well.
