Anything about Tarrytown NY?

I can get a good deal on a hotel in Tarrytown, NY, but I don’t know if there is much to do in that area. My main concern is if there is easy transportation from there to NYC, preferably by a rail transit. I also know Sleepy Hollow is close by, but I don’t know if there is much to do there either. It is a trip for my 30th b-day (a girls trip). I’m interested mainly in the areas of sightseeing, nightlife, and shopping. Any tips or suggestions would be helpful.

Sleepy Hollow is.. well sleepy hollow, you’re right about not much to do there, besides an old cemetery, old mansion & an old church, but honestly you really need to check it out during halloween (Has the ol’ town appeal for it). The main problem about being far yet close to NYC is if you take a train from tarrytown to NYC, last service (Type in Metro North to confirm) is at 1:50 AM & they do not start up until commuter time 5 AM. Which can work for you if you’re willing to party until 5 AM. But if you just want to stay until 3 AM & head home you will need to hang out at a restaurant or somewhere else until the train’s running. NYC is really varied & it depends on how you socialize (Bars, clubs, 30+, Reggae, Reggaeton, Rap, Rock, Live, Jazz, Techno etc) you need to check out some party websites to find that out too. I like Webster Hall, but other people can’t stand it. Some people like LQ, but maybe it’s not your crowd. Just a starting point & for shopping if you have money, go to 5th Ave Central Park, crazy go to Soho/The Village. Bargains, 34th & Broadway for the swap meet.
Good Luck.

Why did Laura Bush not take responsibility when she ran a stop sign and killed a guy?

In 1963, Laura Bush ran a stop sign in Midland Texas and T-boned a guy who subsequently died. She did not receive a citation and even snubbed the victim’s family by not going to his funeral even though she knew him real well. She just walked away from any responsibility which, I thought, Republicans blame Dem of doing.

Is is still legal in Texas to run stop signs and would somebody today not face any legal consequences like Bush didn’t or is Laura "special".

She killed one, her husband killed over a million

You are absolutely right. We should use our time machine to travel back in time to the 2000 elections, post this story on PMSNBC, and stop George W Bush from being elected president. (c’mon on man)
Drew Bloodsd | Mar 06, 2009

Yes the police in Midland knew 17 year old Laura was going to be first lady so they went easy on her. They were scared for their jobs.

At least you didnt claim she was drunk like the last idiot that posted a question like this.

P.S. She wasnt a Bush back then. The more I think of your question the more BS I see in it.
My Brain | Mar 06, 2009

No one wants to be responsible for their actions anymore. Ms. Bush is no different. But be realistic – it was in 1963. Ms. Bush probably had no thoughts of being a republican back then. It isn’t a republican/democrat thing. Americans do not accept responsibility for their actions. Grow up and stop the bickering about politics. This is not a political issue.

Rob | Mar 06, 2009

Oh did she not take responsiblity? Common sense tells me that if she had been wrong she would have went to prison. Grasping for straws makes you look foolish.

Shilshoh: You would have b*tched if Bush hadn’t of done something about 9/11. I dont like war….but when it hits home..you don’t stand there and invite another attack.
You dont really know me | Mar 06, 2009

She did, unlike your drunken hero Tedward Kennedy who swam away to safety and left a screaming frantic girl to drown all alone. And this is the hero you nitwits look up to and admire, a drunken fat azz. I wonder if he sees images of a girl hysterically flailing about in water when he has one of his seizures. And I hope he experiences this over and over again forever and ever when he goes to the flames where he belongs!
SLUM DOG Communist | Mar 06, 2009

wow… you are one desperate, hateful person… get a life
Crazy J | Mar 06, 2009

HOW, exactly, did she not take responsibility? Do you have any sources confirming that SHE failed to take responsibility? It is hardly her fault if no one charged her with any crimes. She was 17 years old – not even legally an adult. As to consequences today vs. in 1963 – well, laws were different then. This is old news.

Check out the entire story on Snopes – there is more to it than you say, and you have embellished details that are not fact (such as her snubbing the family).

This has nothing to do with republicans or democrats. It was just an tragic accident.

How do you feel about the Rumor about Pedro Martinez going to the Florida Marlins?

I think that Pedro is just using this as leverage to ensure that the Mets keep him around. I don’t think he has any true desire to sport a Marlins uniform.
Your opinions?

I can see what you are getting at. Pedro is looking for a team badly and he wants to go back to the mets badly. I just don’t see the mets going after him. Their rotation as is includes Johan Santana, John Maine, and Mike Pelfrey. The Mets will be having Tim Redding, Johnathan Niese, and Fernando Martinez fight for the last two spots. The Mets have been linked to Derek Lowe, Randy Wolf, and Oliver Perez for a spot in the rotation. All three of these pitchers are better than Pedro right now so if they sign one of them, they will have spots 1-4 secured and they will have the Redding, Niese, and Fernando duke it out for the last spot in the rotation.

Pedro has said supposedly that he is interested in being a Marlin. I mean he would fit in quite nice if I do say so myself. First, he would bring a veteren presence to a young pitching staff. He could teach the youngsters a thing or two about pitching. He brings world series and post season experience. Second, he would come cheap. After his season last year, he won’t be asking for too much money. He would help keep the Marlins within a reasonable amount of money spent. Third, he still has some stuff left. I mean he isn’t the same pedro as he was a few years ago thats for sure, but if he is healthy, he can give you pretty good quality starts. He would be more of a #3 or #4 starter for the Marlins.

I hope this helps!!

Bad for the Marlins.Great for the other teams. Pedro is dead weight
tight_end51 | Jan 11, 2009

I don’t think he’d mind going there, Marlins are an up & coming team despite fairly limited payroll. Obviously lots of Spanish speaking folks in South Florida, too, he’d be a fan favorite down there, even if he’s not the pitcher he was 4 or 5 years ago.
TC | Jan 11, 2009

I’m surprised that Pedro would want to go to a team like the Marlins, given that they most likely won’t contend and he’s aging and struggling.
Joel D | Jan 11, 2009

well, actually he would love to play with the marlins. he lives in south florida and he actually told his agent he would like to be with the fish. but now its being reported that the marlins are the ones that have no interest at all. i dont understand why, i think it would be a perfect fit. he is a veteran pitcher that could really help out the young studs the marlins have. not too mention he could put a lot of people in the seats.
Kobe Bryant | Jan 11, 2009

The Marlins have no need to sign Pedro. Mets paid him $53MM for four years and got 80 starts out of him. Needless to say 20 starts per year is not what the Mets were looking for. At 37 years old, I wouldn’t expect a sudden jump in the amount of innings. Florida should just stick to their young arms.
Rob | Jan 11, 2009

for a paycut, he could definitely help them, especially if he decided to go into a middle relievers role
guerrero82 | Jan 11, 2009

As a Mets fan I hope he goes to the Marlins.
The Mets could use the big bucks he gets to get a good young player.

Baron von Hippo | Jan 11, 2009

Hey, why not? Players in Pedro’s situation are the exact type of guys that the Marlins tend to pounce on and run them until the fuel meter reads empty. I hadn’t even thought about it before, but that actually makes perfect sense.

This is It Reviews Respectable, but Irrelevant

28.10.09
&Nbsp;Jackson’s This Is It is not just any movie. And no matter what This Is It reviews say, the “final” look at Michael Jackson is about to be a massive phenomenon.

As anyone alive knows, the Michael Jackson This Is It tour was supposed to be the King of Pop’s last series of shows. It was his last show, but not for the reasons anyone expected. With Jackson’s death, This Is It looked to be dead as well, until director Kenny Ortega and company decided to turn the This Is It rehearsals into a documentary film.

Now This Is It is indeed a swan song for Jackson, as the documentary has two hours of footage in which he rehearses new and old material. It is only supposed to run for two weeks, starting today, but the massive box office to come might extend the run. So This Is It reviews don’t stand to do much to change that.

Very few reviews can be that objective, depending on what someone’s view of Jackson was. The first This Is It review probably wasn’t that objective, since it came from Michael Jackson’s old friend, Elizabeth Taylor. She posted a series of raves on a Twitter page yesterday, after being one of the first to see the film.

Now, Michael Jackson fans and critics can review This Is It for themselves, and the early responses from critics aren’t too bad. As of 9:30 a.m., Rotten Tomatoes has the documentary at 65% positive, with 13 fresh reviews and seven rotten ones. The positive responses rave about seeing Jackson perform one last time, while the negative ones regard it as a missed opportunity with little new insight.

But no matter what future This Is It reviews wind up saying, Jackson fans will deliver the final word with an overwhelming box office win. Hundreds of millions are expected here and worldwide, and that’s before other This Is It merchandise comes out.

I love Their Eyes were Watching God! Have you read, The Poisonwood Bible? It is an excellent story. I highly recommend it for the pacing and beautiful unfolding of it. You are hooked by the first page. I hardly ever read fiction anymore because I am so hard to please. I have to have a really good story to keep me interested and I detest overwriting. Here is an amazon page with it. I have found the reviews very helpful on many of the books I choose to read. For non fiction, I suggest The Emancipator’s Wife. It is a book about Mary Todd Lincoln which reads like a novel and illuminates her character to a new degree, not paintiing her as simply a shrewish nutcase.

It would help if you gave your age and interests, but here goes:

http://www.life-after-harry-potter.com

Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each book along with a brief summary of adult content. There is also a "Reader’s Choice" list of favorite books, and a list of heroine sorcery fantasy books.

Also these: http://www.interleaves.org/~rteeter/grto ther.html#great . Lots of lists, but I especially like the Harvard Classics list – all the books that I should have read, but (mostly) never did.

Finally, these: http://www.awardannals.com/wiki/Honor_ro ll:Genres – pick your genre, find the best books ranked by how many awards they’ve won.

I hope this helps.
